Developmental Phases

The Path to Two-Wheeled Freedom

The Strider journey helps parents guide a child's development, progressively building the skills needed for a lifetime of riding adventures. We break down the learn-to-ride experience into three clear phases: Basic Balanced Riding, Advanced Balanced Riding, and Independent Balanced Pedaling.

Within each phase, children develop both Core Riding Skills (the immediate, tangible abilities learned on the bike) and Broader Developmental Skills (the overarching cognitive, motor, and emotional growth fostered by riding).

Phase 1:
Discovery

The start of the Strider journey is a Discovery Phase, where your child is simply making friends with the bike. This phase is all about comfort, curiosity, and connection.

  • Core Riding Skills: Sensory exploration to understand the bike, discovering the seat, moving with the object, and beginning to learn their center of gravity.
  • Broader Developmental Skills: Early gross motor skills (reaching, grabbing, core strength), confidence, and sensory exploration.
  • Supporting Products:
    • Strider 2-in-1 Rocking Bike — Advances introduction to a Strider 12 balance bike by a full year, reducing fear and building confidence through play and exploration.
    • Strider 12 Bikes — Their two-wheel design is core for developing initial balance, maneuverability, and control. Adjustable features ensure a proper fit.

    Phase 2:
    Basic Balanced Riding

After establishing familiarity, the journey enters its core stage. This phase begins with confident, walking strides and ends with the ultimate success point: seated two-wheeled gliding.

    • Core Riding Skills: Getting seated and striding (feet in contact with the ground), learning center of gravity, and achieving seated two-wheeled gliding (feet off the ground).
    • Broader Developmental Skills: Focus, concentration, coordination, confidence, and independence.
  • Supporting Products:
    • Strider 12 Bikes — Standing footrests support advanced riding, while performance geometry ensures stability at various speeds.
    • Strider 14x (for riders upgrading from the Strider 12 or first-time riders who are a bit older and ready for a larger bike): Starts in balance mode to confidently transfer or develop skills on a larger bike. Its design and lightweight nature ensure maneuverability and stability.

    Phase 3:
    Advanced Balanced Riding

Moving beyond gliding, this phase is about taking on new challenges — like standing on footrests, leaning into turns, and mastering control at speed. Little riders truly transform into confident, independent adventurers.

    • Core Riding Skills: Standing on the footrests, manipulating the bike around obstacles, navigating varied terrain, gaining speed, and mastering leaning into turns.
    • Broader Developmental Skills: Advanced coordination, problem-solving, environmental awareness, and resilience (falling and getting back up on their own).
  • Supporting Strider Bikes:
    • Strider 14x: Converts to pedal mode once balancing and gliding are mastered. Its patented design allows for a low seat height, enabling a low-stress transition to independent pedaling.

    Phase 4:
    Independent Balanced Pedaling

This is the exciting transition where kids move from striding to pedaling on two wheels, all at their own pace. They use a perfectly sized narrow pedal that allows for either striding around the pedal or pedaling, ensuring a low-stress, successful transition into independent riding without training wheels.

    • Core Riding Skills: Transition to pedaling (stride to gain momentum, glide while finding pedals, then pedal away) and using "dual propulsion" to build skill.
    • Broader Developmental Skills: Increased independence and freedom.
  • Supporting Products:
    • Strider 14x: Converts to pedal mode once balancing and gliding are mastered. Its patented design allows for a low seat height, enabling a low-stress transition to independent pedaling.
    • Strider 20x: From beginners to experts, this Strider balance bike for adults bridges the gap for all abilities. The 20x Sport is an inclusive, balance to pedal bike and the perfect learn-to-ride tool for ages 8 through adulthood.
